Weekly Report

Monday, 12 August 2019

Colin Apperley and Frank Kennedy, fishing the Daltra Beat, got the week off to a great early start on Monday morning with 3 fish before 8.30am. Colin had a grilse of over 3lb from Jean's Cast and a 7lb salmon from the tail of the Island Pool. Frank landed a 9lb salmon from Jean's Cast and a 2lb sea trout from Maharajah. They also lost 2 and rose about a dozen fish. All fish caught on a Willie Gunn tube and all released.

Following on from Monday's success Colin had 2 grilse from the tail of the Island pool on Tuesday; both were about 2lbs and both caught on a Willie Gunn tube. They also rose a number of fish and saw fish in most pools.

The Dunearn Beat got on the scoresheet on Tuesday with  John McDowall landing a 12lb salmon from the Green Bank on an Ally Shrimp in the early afternoon and later on Gavin McDowall landing a 7lb sea trout from the tail of Morgan's Haugh on a cascade. Both fish safely released.

Colin Apperley and Frank Kennedy finished a 3 day stay in Dulsie Cottage in style with 6 fish on Wednesday. Early morning they both had a fish from the tail of the Island pool, Frank a 10lb salmon and Colin a 4lb grilse. Frank then managed a 14lb salmon in Daltra and a fresh 5lber from Dalnashaugh. Then in the early afternoon he had a 7lb fish from the tail of Laird's. Finally, Colin finished the scoring for the day at 8pm with a 10lb salmon from Dalnashaugh. All the fish were returned and the successful fly was a 1" Willie Gunn cone head. All in all a fantastic 3 day visit with 11 fish.

The Dunearn Beat had a good day as well on Wednesday with Gavin McDowall landing a 2½lb grilse in Nettle Hole on an Usk witch fly and a 14lb salmon in the March Stream on a ½" Willie Gunn. John McDowall then landed a 15lb salmon in Peter's Pot on a size 10 Ally Shrimp.

Gavin McDowall had more success on the Dunearn Beat on Thursday afternoon with a 14lb salmon from Green Bank and then a long thin 3lb grilse from tail of Lady Mary's, both on a black snaelda fly and safely released.

James Westgate and friends had a very pleasant day on Daltra on Friday with falling river and clouded sun. His guest, Nick Middlehurst caught a 10½lb salmon in mid-section Dalnashaugh in the morning using a Willie Gunn Tube . After a quick photo it was safely released.

Friday was also good for the McDowalls on the Dunearn Beat. First at 12.30pm Gavin landed a 15lb fish in the tail of Morgan's Haugh on a 1" gold Willie Gunn tube and later on at 6.30pm John safely returned a 12lb salmon from Green Bank on a size 8 cascade. That was the end of the scoring on the Dunearn Beat, although they did also report losing a good size fish in the tail of Lady Mary's on Friday after a 10 minute struggle.

Saturday was another good day for fishing with nice steady/falling river. George Middlehurst was fishing with Jamie Westgate on Mini Daltra and he caught and returned an 8lb salmon in the Island Pool using a cascade fly.
