Weekly Report

Monday, 17 September 2018

A very promising start to the week for Frank Kennedy & Colin Apperley, fishing the Daltra Beat, who reported their catch for Monday was 4 fish, all safely released. 2 cock fish in Jean's Cast and 2 hen fish in Dalnashaugh all around the 10lb mark and they also rose another 10-20 fish. Despite seeing plenty of fish he reports they were not easy caught!

Heavy rain overnight Monday meant the river was high Tuesday morning but started dropping off by midday. Dunearn Beat had 1 x 4lb grilse for Tuesday, caught by Jamie Adamson in the Kennel Pool and Colin Gold lost a fish in Lady Mary's. On Wednesday Frank and Colin managed another 3 fish on the Daltra Beat before the river rose again and fishing stopped for the day. 1 x 8lb from Dalnashaugh and 2 from Jean's Cast 1x 8lb and 1 x 3lb all safely released.

Heavy rain meant another steep rise overnight on Wednesday, but things had settled down by Thursday lunchtime. Frank and Colin had a productive afternoon on Daltra with 4 fish landed and another 3 lost. There was more success in Jean's Cast with 7lb & 13lb salmon. Then there was a 6lb salmon from the Loop followed by a 2lber back in Jean's Cast. All were safely returned.

Conditions were good on Friday and Frank and Colin kept up their run on Daltra with another 5 fish. The first was a 14lb salmon from the Loop. This was followed by 2 x 15lb salmon from Dalnashaugh and then a 2.5lb fish from the Whin Pool and another 2.5lber from Lairds. All were safely released. There was also success on the Dunearn Beat on Friday morning, with an 11lb salmon from the Haugh Stream and an 8.5lber from Gaffers.

Frank Kennedy & Colin Apperley finished a great week on Daltra with another 6 fish to take their total for the week to 21 fish. An excellent result, particularly when you consider they were off the river for roughly 2 days because of high water. In the morning Colin landed a 4lb and 5lb grilse in the tail of the Loop and Frank had a 7lb salmon from the tail of Island. Colin had more success from the tail of the Loop in the afternoon with two more grilse and then he landed a 3lb grilse from Jean's Cast to end the scoring for the week. All the fish were safely returned and the successful flies for the week were Willie Gunn cone, Red Francis and Conehead variants. On the Dunearn Beat there were 3 more fish on Saturday. The first was a 14lb salmon from the Haugh Stream, followed by a 5lber from Barclay's Bank and a 10lb salmon from Lady Mary's.
